My AMF "Husky" Snowblower
Located in Suffolk County, Long Island, NY

Welcome! Since you're viewing this website, I have to assume you have an interest in this AMF machine. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I'll be happy to reply. Lets face it, I am somewhat proud of the fact that I was able to restore this machine. "They certainly don't build them like this anymore".

Hello, my name is Richard. A little history...

My father purchased the new "Husky" sometime between 1969-1971, I think! After several years of regular use, the machine sat unused almost 17 years in the back of his garage until...

I acquired the AMF Husky snowblower from my father, circa 1990, when he moved from his house. He had no more use for it, but I knew I could use it if I could get it running again. Besides I was the only one in our family that knew how to repair it. So naturally, I would be the one to acquire it. So I managed to get it to my home by loading it in the back of my 1990 Plymouth Grand Voyager. Minivans are so handy, aren't they?

Once I took it home, I tried to start the engine without success. So I removed the carburetor, dissassembled it completely and soaked it in Gumout® for many days. After drying it out with compressed air I reassembled it with a new gasket kit. It actually started up and ran.

Since then I have on numerous occasions needed to buy throttle replacement parts for the "Snow King" 4.0 HP engine. Because of excessive engine vibration, the throttle levers break off, leaving me with nothing to adjust the throttle. Two dealers informed me the throttle control bracket is no longer available. So the throttle control I now have had better last another 30 years. So I had to manufacture my own throttle lever out of aluminum to replace the original lever that broke off. I now have a throttle cable connected to it and it has been working great.

Sure glad my father had enough sense to order this "monster" with the tire chains. Can you believe that they are the original chains too! They will probably last another 30 years.

As for the machine, I've only had to replace the rubber ring for the "clutch". The rear lower cover screws loosen up all the time and they need tightening on occasions. Other than these minor quirks this machine has been a true workhorse. This machine weighs about 220 lbs.

Close ups of the carburetor, new muffler and heater box
I made some major changes.

I replaced the old muffler with a completely different type than the original.
I added a throttle cable, making it easier to control the engine speed and I finally
reinstalled the carburetor heater box.

RUBBER DISC INFORMATION

Murray, a division of Briggs & Stratton, has taken over the AMF line
and still provides parts for many of the snowthrower models.

Since I get so many emails every year from so many people that still own or recently acquired an AMF machine I am providing the Murray part number for the rubber disc that drives the wheels for either the Husky or the Polar Bear snowthrowers. I also recently learned that Sears offers the same part (and same part number) for one of their older Craftsman snowthrowers that apparently have the same mechanical drive wheel design as the AMF.

Murray Rubber Disc - Part # 27046MA

You can locate this part online through many different suppliers
