Disability Pension Taxation Update

I guess by now, everyone has heard that the IRS will be taxing retirees who got out on a 3/4 pension.

There were stories going around that they would be taxed for all the years after their 20th year.  The IRS had

been rolling this around for quite a while.  Well this morning I received a phone call from Jim Dahl, the retiree

representative from the UFA.  He advised me that Jim Sleven from the UFA had just finished meeting

with the IRS.  The IRS informed Jim that they WILL NOT be taxing 3/4 retirees pensions.  ALL RETIREES

ARE SAFE.  However, and this does not affect us, future 3/4 retirees, starting in 2009, will have their

pensions taxed.

We here at the URFA will give everyone the full details, when we receive them.  For now, you may

inform your membership of the news, which I sure will come as a relief.

VETERANS RECORDS
The National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) has initiated online records request procedures and is working to make it easier for veterans with computers and Internet access to obtain copies of documents from their military files.  Military veterans and the next of kin of deceased former military members may now use a new online military personnel records system to request documents. Other individuals with a need for documents must still complete the Standard Form 180 which can be downloaded from the online web site.  The new web-based application was designed to provide better service on these requests by eliminating the records center's mailroom processing time.  Also, because the requester will be asked to supply all information essential for NPRC to process the request, delays that normally occur when NPRC has to ask veterans for additional information will be minimized.  Veterans and next of kin may access this application at
http://vetrecs.archives.gov.

Call on a Tuesday or Thursday only.  That is only when someone is available.
The Surgical Assistance Fund provides partial payment, from $10.00 to $625.00, according to their fee schedule.  This benefit to its members, is for surgical procedures only and some specif- ied additional items.  All single active members of the UFA and UFOA pay $10.00 annually.  Married members with families pay $15.00.  UFA members who retired before “71", pay $10.00.  Other retired members of the UFA and their wives pay nothing.  A widow will receive a letter from the fund and can enroll for a $10.00 annual fee.  Retired members of the UFOA will receive a reminder postcard in June to pay their dues by July 31st.
If dues are not paid promptly, members will be dropped from the plan.  Once dropped you will not be reinstated.  NOTE: That you have one year to submit a claim.
This is an excellent benefit and you should take advantage of it.
